  Pre-course Information

The summer school consists of five courses: two orchestras, (the Symphony for those of Grade 8 standard, and the Sinfonietta for those of Grades 5-7), Choral Singing For Pleasure, the Late Learners’ String Ensemble and Second Wind. The participants form the Membership of the New London Music Society for the duration of the course. Specialist tutors coach sectional rehearsals focused on concert repertoire for both orchestras and Choral Singing For Pleasure. Tutors also lead the string sections of both orchestras. String, wind and brass ensembles are also timetabled, again coached by relevant tutors.

During the week, there are concerts for each of these groups, as well as a Members' Concert for solo works or smaller ensembles. The tutors coach rehearsals and play in the concerts and also perform in their own Staff Concert (not to be missed!).

Location

Queenswood School is in Hertfordshire close to Potters Bar (M25 Jn 21). It has beautiful grounds for walking and relaxing.

Accommodation

Living accommodation comprises good standard, single and multiple occupancy rooms, normally used for the Queenswood schoolgirls. Those who would prefer en-suite accommodation are booked into a nearby Quality Inn, though please note that there is an extra charge for this. The food is ample and tasty, with cooked or continental breakfast, salad selection at lunch and a three-course dinner. The Course Bar is open every lunch and during the evenings, with a plentiful selection of soft and alcoholic drinks and snacks.

The music accommodation is good, with both large halls and small practise practice rooms available.

The Course Timetable

There are normally two 90-minute full rehearsals every day, plus ensemble rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, free time for members own music-making and evening open sessions or concerts.
